Behind the Scenes: How We Design a Fabrication File at Iron Outback

Summary: Every design we make starts with a purpose.

Sometimes it’s to solve a specific problem.
Other times, it’s about creating something that simply doesn’t exist yet — or isn’t easily accessible in a quality, build-ready form.

Our bigger goal is to build a one-stop library of workshop-ready CAD plans for high-quality products that people can actually make themselves.

We do this to make custom fabrication affordable, accessible, and achievable for everyday Australians.

Here’s what that process looks like.

Step 1: Start With the Use Case

We begin by thinking about how something will actually be used.

Not how it looks on a screen, but:

  • how much weight it needs to handle

  • where it might rub, flex, or crack

  • how someone will build it in a normal shed

  • and whether the materials are easy to get

If it doesn’t make sense in the real world, it doesn’t move forward.

Step 2: Build It in CAD

Most ideas start as a rough sketch or a note from the workshop.

That idea is then rebuilt in CAD. Every part is drawn with the build process in mind — where it will be cut, folded, welded, and bolted together.

Nothing is added just to look good.
If it’s there, it has a job to do.

Step 3: Keep It Strong and Simple

We don’t try to make things clever. We try to make them work.

Each design is adjusted to:

  • reduce wasted material

  • avoid common mistakes

  • keep the number of parts sensible

  • and make the build as straightforward as possible

The goal is fewer headaches, not more features.

Step 4: Put Everything in One Pack

When you download an Iron Outback file, you get a full set of drawings, not just a single page.

That includes:

  • PDF workshop drawings

  • DXF files for laser cutting

  • fold drawings for the brake press

  • cut lists and parts lists

Everything you need to build it without guessing.

Why We Do It

A lot of fabrication plans out there are either overpriced, incomplete, or hard to follow.

We’re trying to do the opposite.

If someone can open one of our files and feel confident walking into their shed or local laser shop, then we’ve done our job.
